If your installer isn’t on the MCS register, stop the conversation right there. Here’s the plain truth about what this certification actually does and doesn’t do.

MCS stands for Microgeneration Certification Scheme. Established in 2007 and backed by the UK government, it’s the national quality standard for small-scale renewable energy — solar panels, heat pumps, battery storage, and more. When an installer carries MCS certification, it means they’ve been independently assessed against technical standards (MCS 001 installer requirements and MIS 3002 for Solar PV specifically), quality management processes, and business competence. It’s not just a badge they stick on their website — they have to earn it and maintain it through regular surveillance audits.

After installation, your installer must issue your MCS certificate within 10 working days. This document registers your system on the MCS Installations Database and is your proof of compliance for SEG registration, insurance, and property sales.

How to Vet Your Quotes — Always Get at Least Three

Getting multiple quotes isn’t just about finding the lowest price. It’s how you spot underspecified systems, unrealistic claims, and corners being cut before you sign anything.

Get minimum three quotes

RECC specifically advises this — and for good reason. Three quotes let you establish a realistic price range and spot outliers at both ends. In 2026, a properly specified 4kWp system from an independent MCS installer typically costs £7,000–£9,500. If one quote is £3,500, something is missing. If another is £15,000, ask what’s inflating it.

Insist on a physical site survey first

A legitimate installer will not give you a fixed-price quote without surveying your property — roof condition, orientation, shading profile, structural integrity, and electrical capacity all affect the design. Any quote based purely on satellite imagery or a phone call is not a proper quote. Walk away from guesswork.

Compare specs, not just the total price

A cheaper quote often means cheaper components. Make sure every quote names the specific panel brand and model, the inverter model, total system kWp, estimated annual kWh output calculated using MCS Performance Estimate methodology, and all warranty durations. Red Flags to Watch Out For

Solar scams in the UK don’t usually involve fake panels. They come wrapped in high-pressure sales tactics, vague specifications, and promises that quietly unravel years later. Here’s what should make you pause — or walk away entirely.

No MCS certification

The number one filter. Check mcscertified.com before anything else. Without MCS you lose SEG income, most government scheme eligibility, and potentially your manufacturer warranties. Not negotiable — ever.

“Sign today or the price goes up”

A reputable installer will never pressure you to sign on the day. “Today only” discounts and artificial urgency are classic high-pressure tactics. A good company gives you time to compare quotes. Walk away — the price will be there next week too.

Vague or unnamed specifications

Quotes that say “high quality monocrystalline panels” without a brand name, model number, or wattage are hiding something. Same with inverters. You have the right to know exactly what’s going on your roof. If they won’t tell you, ask yourself why.

A fixed quote with no site visit

Any installer offering a definitive price without visiting your property doesn’t know your roof orientation, shading profile, structural condition, or electrical capacity. A system designed on guesswork won’t perform as promised — and the installer will blame the weather.

Verifiable local reviews with a real trading history

Check Trustpilot, Google, and Which? Trusted Trader. Look for several years of business history and a steady stream of reviews — not just a sudden burst of new ones. Ask for two or three recent local customer references you can actually call.

Take your MCS-registered candidates and check their reviews on Google, Trustpilot, and Checkatrade. Which? Trusted Trader is the gold standard. Look for at least 20–30 reviews and a trading history of two years or more. Be sceptical of companies with a sudden burst of reviews and little history before that.

Verify your shortlisted installers at recc.org.uk or the HIES website. These consumer protection schemes are what protect your deposit and give you a route to redress if things go wrong. Before signing, ask each installer for two or three recent local customer references you can contact. Ask those customers specifically about the post-installation experience: Did the MCS certificate arrive promptly? Was DNO notification handled correctly? Confirm two things: the certification is currently active, and it specifically covers Solar PV (some companies are certified for heat pumps but not solar). Then cross-reference your shortlist against reviews on Google, Trustpilot, and Which? Trusted Trader before making contact.

MCS stands for Microgeneration Certification Scheme — the UK government-backed national quality standard for small-scale renewable energy. An MCS-certified installer has been independently assessed against technical, quality management, and business standards. It certifies both the products (panels and inverters must meet MCS 010 performance standards) and the installing company (qualified staff, documented processes, quality management systems).

The most practical reason to insist on MCS: without it, you cannot access the Smart Export Guarantee, which pays you for every unit of electricity you export to the grid. MCS is also required for most government grant schemes, expected by solicitors during property sales, and increasingly required by home insurers for systems added to policies.

Get at least three, from different MCS-certified installers. RECC specifically recommends this minimum. Three quotes let you establish a realistic price range, spot any outliers at either extreme, and compare system designs and specifications — not just the total price. On a 4kWp system in 2026, expect a realistic range of roughly £6,000–£9,500 from a qualified independent installer. If one quote is significantly outside that range at either end, dig into why.

Never choose on price alone — a cheaper quote that doesn’t name the panel or inverter model, or offers only a 2-year workmanship guarantee, is simply not the same product.
